Nigeria is among 60 economies affected by a new round of tariffs imposed by the United States under President Donald Trump's latest trade policy.
The U.S. announced a 12.5% tariff on imports from Nigeria, accusing the country and others of failing to effectively prohibit the importation of goods produced through forced labour.
The measure, unveiled by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), is part of a broader effort to pressure trading partners into strengthening laws and enforcement against forced labour in global supply chains.
According to the USTR, the affected countries have not "imposed and effectively enforced a prohibition on the importation of goods produced with forced labour," prompting the new trade restrictions.
The tariffs are expected to impact exports from Nigeria to the United States, with businesses closely monitoring the potential economic effects of the latest U.S. trade policy.
