OAU Final-Year Engineering Student Dies in Private Hostel; Police Confirm Suicide

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a 500-level student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

According to a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution received information about an emergency at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The incident occurred at a private apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

The university’s Quick Response and Security team, along with officers from the Nigeria Police Force ‘A’ Division in Moore, Ile-Ife, responded to the scene. The student was taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

Osun State Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that preliminary investigations indicate the death was a suicide. The university has handed over relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation. Student Affairs authorities have also been notified to provide support to affected students.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire expressed condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the deceased. He urged students facing emotional distress, academic pressure, or personal difficulties to seek help through official campus support structures, stating that no student should feel they have to face overwhelming challenges alone.
