Senate Moves to Force Facebook, X, TikTok, Others to Establish Offices in Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has advanced a bill that would require major social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Instagram and others, to establish physical offices in Nigeria.

The proposal, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), received widespread support during a public hearing in Abuja. The bill seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, making it mandatory for social media companies operating in the country to maintain a local presence.

Speaking on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Ashiru said the legislation is aimed at promoting accountability, improving regulatory engagement and encouraging greater investment in Nigeria's digital economy.

Defending the bill, Senator Nwoko stressed that the move is not intended to discourage technology companies from operating in Nigeria but to ensure they contribute more meaningfully to the country's economy.

He pointed to countries such as the United Kingdom, India, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Brazil, where global tech firms have established local offices, creating jobs, boosting tax revenues and supporting innovation.

According to him, Nigeria, as Africa's largest digital market, should not be left behind in attracting similar investments and opportunities.

The Senate Committee is expected to review submissions from stakeholders before presenting its report for further legislative consideration.
